ARES Planting Design for Beginners

Wednesdays, 6.30pm - 8.30pm, online

6 week evening course (held every fortnight)

Indicative maximum class size: 16

Standard price per learner: £239

If you’re an amateur gardener with a general interest in garden and planting design, considering a career change, wanting to increase basic plant knowledge or simply looking to improve your own garden space whilst learning some new skills and acquiring knowledge along the way, then this course is for you.

Course Description

We’ll introduce you to the basic principles and techniques involved in creating successful planting schemes that can be applied to your own garden space. You’ll also learn how to appraise the growing conditions within your garden space and identify plants that will thrive there.

 

On this course you will learn about:

     Basic plant identification

     The 7 principles of planting design

     Site appraisal methods

     Soil sampling techniques

     Soil improvement options

     Planting combinations

     An Introduction to Creating Planting Plans

Sessions will feature a blend of theoretical study and practical exercises.

Tutor Profile

Yvette is an experienced garden designer and lecturer with particular interests in wildlife gardening and design psychology. Combining lifelong passions for garden design, horticulture and art, Yvette graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 2010 with a First Class Honours Degree in Environmental Design and Management. Prior to this she completed the Foundation Degree programme in Horticulture, Garden Design, to Distinction level. Yvette received awards for outstanding achievement in each year of study.

In 2011, trade stands designed by Yvette for Hillarys Blinds were awarded the prestigious RHS Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Presentation at both the RHS Hampton Court and Tatton Park Flower Shows.

Yvette has also worked with TV gardener David Domoney as Head of Planting for his show gardens and exhibits, including working at the RHS Chelsea, RHS Hampton Court Palace, and Southport Flower Shows.

Alongside running her own garden design business, Yvette lectures in Garden Design, Applied Design and International Landscape Strategies at our Brackenhurst Campus. She is also a course tutor at the British Academy of Garden Design.
