Course Description

Zines are a great way to publish your own art, poems, writing, thoughts, and anything else you would like to communicate.

On this practical course, you will combine lectures and workshops with photography and software sessions to produce a zine.

On this course you will:

  • generate ideas around what is at the heart of a zine and what it aims to do
  • research your competitors and target audience, and look at how you can make your zine stand out from what already exists
  • consider narrative, tone of voice, layout and structure
  • discuss the design, style and printing techniques that can make a zine unique
  • make a small zine a day to experiment and get ideas flowing
  • generate photographic and written content around your ideas
  • learn how to design a zine using Adobe Photoshop and InDesign.

What will I gain?

In addition to an excellent knowledge of the design and print industry, you’ll leave the course with your own printed zine and the InDesign files to go on and create more issues.

The zine, images and articles will also become valuable pieces to add to a portfolio.

Where you'll learn: You will be based in the School of Art and Design on the City Campus.

You’ll find collaborative working spaces where you develop your ideas and concepts, and IT suites equipped with industry standard software including Adobe Creative Cloud.

You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.

Level: Open to all

Entry requirement: You should have an enthusiasm for art direction and storytelling, and an interest in developing your creative and technical skills.

No previous design or software experience is required for this course.

Good ideas and a willingness to collaborate are more important.
