This online introductory course for new advocates will concentrate on the first principles of vulnerable witness handling in the criminal courts.

This course requires no prior knowledge and will provide a useful guide for the newly qualified advocate of up to 3 years PQE

Course Description

During the course delegates will:

  • Consider the form and content of the ground rules hearing.
  • Discuss the “20 principles of questioning” and consider their application in practice
  • Construct questions for cross examination of a vulnerable witness
  • Consider the techniques for cross examination of vulnerable witnesses
  • Review the options available to the court to facilitate the examination of vulnerable witnesses - Including special measures
  • Consider the “Advocate Toolkits” for examination of vulnerable witnesses
  • Work with an experienced tutor to craft a set of appropriate questions.
  • Consider the available options when questioning does not go according to plan.

On successful completion of the course delegates will be able to:

  • effectively prepare for the examination of a vulnerable witness
  • construct appropriate questions for cross examination of a vulnerable witness
  • conduct a Ground Rules hearing
  • understand Special Measures available.

How you’re taught

This course will be delivered live, online, between 10 am and 4 pm each day with a 45 minute break for lunch at 12.30 pm.

On enrolment, you will receive a programme, a short reading list/workbook, a case study and an exercise which must be completed prior to the course. You must read the case study prior to the course.

On completion, you will receive a Certificate of Completion and feedback form.
