Experimental Moving Image (evenings)

Thursdays 6 – 8.30 pm, five weeks

Moving image is everywhere, from short films to video art and from experimental music videos to animation.

On this practical course, you’ll learn how to create individual and expressive moving image works, generating unique content, short films and sequences with a contemporary art focus.

Suitable for a complete beginner or anyone who has created video content before, this technical course will help you to develop your own creative voice to make visually interesting moving images.

There’ll be lots of opportunities for experimenting, exploration and risk taking so that you can confidently communicate your ideas through moving image.

You’ll use cameras and digital editing equipment to create a self-directed moving image project and, if you’re feeling brave, you can submit your work to short film festivals at the end of the course.

Course Description

Many of us now carry around a camera in our pocket which has created a world of moving image that floods our daily lives.

Using your own content of small unedited clips that you have found and made, you’ll work with the elements that intrigue you the most to make new and original moving images, video art and experimental film.

These will be the stimuli to aid the creative process and exploration of your moving image skills, offering new insights and inventive approaches to your individual projects.

You’ll be introduced to the fundamentals of video and moving image installations; from collecting moving images on specific themes to using the cut-up technique to create narratives, and from production to post-production, you’ll focus on experimentation and unexpected ways of thinking.

You’ll complete a series of fun, short projects to generate ideas, create plenty of moving image content and plan your film’s narrative, considering how to communicate your ideas through moving image.

During the course you will:

• develop your understanding of the history of moving image
• generate a storyboard to help form your ideas and set the scene
• use a range of equipment including digital SLRS, sound recorders, microphones and lights
• learn how to create a green screen and edit the footage using Adobe After Effects
• focus on a self-directed project with a unique outcome bespoke to your idea
• practice moving image editing techniques using industry standard software
• present your moving image project in a group screening at the end of the course.

You’ll be introduced to the techniques through practical exercises, classroom discussions and critiques, and one-to-one feedback.

There’ll be lots of chances to share work and discuss the process and consider where you could show your moving image at the end of the course.

What will I gain?

By the end of the course, you’ll have a better understanding of how to create experimental moving images, and how to apply your ideas using a range of different digital processes from production to editing.

You’ll have generated unique moving image content and have plenty of experiments to add to your portfolio and continue exploring the process further.

Level: Beginner / Intermediate

Entry requirement: You should be confident in basic computer skills such as saving files and other basic functions.

No previous video-making experience is required.

Where you’ll learn: You will be based in the School of Art and Design on the City Campus.

You’ll find collaborative working spaces and studios with comprehensive computer suites equipped with software for editing video.

You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.

Claire Davies is an artist who makes moving image, objects, sound, installation, and performance pieces.

Claire is also the Senior Technician in moving image for the fine art department at Nottingham Trent University.

She graduated from Edinburgh College of Art and went on to co-found and co-direct Rhubaba Gallery Studios in Edinburgh.

Claire is currently studying for a Master’s degree in Artists’ Film and Moving Image at Goldsmiths University of London.

She has shown work internationally across art exhibitions and film festivals including; Channel 4’s Random Acts Commission, Sheffield International Documentary Festival,  Alchemy Film Festival, TCBTV at Somerset House in London and Radiophrenia Project at CCA in Glasgow.

Claire has also had a solo exhibition The Valley of Lost Things at Two Queens in Leicester.
