Journalism and Editorial Skills for Student Media

Are you in a leadership role at a campus publication, or will you take over one soon?

This course is for staff and students involved in campus publications and media including websites, blogs, videos, podcasts and social media for universities and student unions.

Our award-winning journalism department will give you the skills and knowledge you need to be an effective, successful and legally safe campus editorial leader.

Course Description

We have taken the most relevant content from our journalism degree courses and condensed it into five intense, interactive days that will give you the confidence to lead your campus publications.

Through practical workshops you’ll develop essential professional skills that will improve upon your existing knowledge and supercharge your publication’s audience engagement.

On this course, you will:

• understand how to operate a legally safe campus publication
• complete alarm bell media law training to avoid landing in trouble
• learn how to inspire your teams to produce high quality student journalists
• practise taking your stories from initial idea to a hard-hitting exclusive
• learn how to maximise reach and engagement across different media
• use a range of storytelling platforms for your publications
• recognise how to get the most from your social channels
• make engaging video and audio content to ensure your website and social media sing
• learn the core principles of print production to make every edition you publish a potential award winner.

Level: Beginner / Professional

Entry requirement: No previous journalism experience is required.

This course is open to anyone leading or contributing to a campus publication.

What will you gain?

By the end of the course, you’ll be a confident editorial leader that is able to use a range of storytelling methods for your publications and can inspire your team to produce high quality student journalism.

A certificate of attendance will be awarded upon completion of the course.

Tutor profile: This course is designed and led by award-winning journalist and journalism degree course leader Jonny Greatrex.

He rose from trainee reporter to digital development editor at the Birmingham Mail and Birmingham Live, before moving into higher education.

Jonny has been part of high achieving innovative journalism teams, in industry and on campus, that have landed national awards.

He has been recognised by NTU with a prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Teaching Award.

Where you'll learn: You will be studying in the Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism, as part of the School of Arts and Humanities on the City Campus.

You will find modern teaching spaces and group study environments to develop your ideas and skills as a journalist.

You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.
