Course Description

On this course you will:

  • learn about professional practice in camera handling, studio and location lighting, posing couples, image manipulation, post production and location lighting
  • find out more about weddings from different cultures, and their requirements
  • learn about the ‘must have’ shots
  • be encouraged to direct and experiment posing real life models
  • develop your people skills to enable you to relax a nervous bride or calm down a boisterous child.

How will the course be taught?

This course will be taught in the photography department of Nottingham Trent University where generations of photographers have learnt their trade and where studio portrait lighting and posing will be practiced.  You will also work outside with the models, whatever the weather, so that you can experience the pressure of working in less than ideal conditions. The course will include:

  • essentials of wedding photography in real life
  • time management and planning with the couple
  • seeing light and different types of light
  • demonstrations with models
  • how to pose
  • introduction to studio photography
  • how to light a bride, and how to light groups
  • posing and arranging groups
  • how to identify, light and compose dynamically
  • practice sessions with models
  • use of studio equipment in a non-studio environment
  • post production and good editing principles
  • image manipulation and retouching
  • accounts, filing and office procedures

What will you gain?

By the end of the course you will have skills to make exciting (and potentially saleable) pictures and be well on your way to developing your own individual style. You will have learnt valuable people skills which are essential when working with clients. You will also have gained knowledge on how to develop your marketing and business skills to find your first paying customers.

Tutor Profile: Crash Taylor is a UK based photographer, filmmaker and educator. In 2009, he was voted one of the top 10 wedding photographers in the UK by Professional Photographer magazine. He photographs 25 wedding adventures each year and has captured weddings in Spain, France, Finland and Hawaii.

When not shooting weddings and portraits, he is teaching workshops and seminars in photography and filmmaking throughout the UK and internationally. In 2014, he became a photography lecture at the renowned photography school at Nottingham Trent University, which he considers his dream job!

He has an extensive film and photo book collection that rivals many libraries. Image making whether stills or motion is therapy for Crash and what he enjoys doing most. The photography addiction began when he was 9 years old; his father bought him a Polaroid camera for a trip to Mexico City. That camera laid the foundation!

“In Photography there are no secrets, there are only principles that we don’t know or haven’t mastered yet.”
