Course Description

On this course you’ll be taught how to turn your ideas into two-dimensional designs, and then how to turn those designs into three-dimensional pieces of art. It’s fully practical, with you engaging in hands-on work from day one.

There will be a combination of group demonstrations plus lots of one-to-one tuition and peer review. Activities will include armature building and quick plasticine sketches as well as learning the techniques needed to produce miniatures for resin, metal casting and reproduction.

On this course you will:

  • be introduced to the materials and tools, and have a Health and Safety briefing
  • create sketches of animals that can inspire monster making, including an off-site drawing session
  • develop sketches of the monsters you want to create
  • learn how to make a complex armature
  • make faces, hands and skin and more complex features such as scales, fur and teeth

As the course progresses you will develop a project and work with a preferred material towards creating a final piece.

This course is suited towards people with either an interest in fine art, model making or fantasy gaming, for personal or professional reasons.

What will I gain?

You’ll leave this course with the knowledge and skills to create your own artwork, both in 2D and 3D form, to further explore in the future.

Tutor profile: Alex Huntley is the founder of Warploque Miniatures. Based in Nottingham, he initially started the company not only as a webstore selling unique fantasy figures for wargamers, collectors and painters, but also as an attempt to avoid his human genetics degree at the University of Nottingham, which he eventually abandoned to work as an artist full-time.

Having been a miniatures geek for more than half his years, he began sculpting full miniatures of his own design around the age of 16. He ran a highly successful Kickstarter campaign for his wargame ‘ArcWorlde’ in 2013 and is planning his next expansion for later this year.
