Adobe Illustrator is a vector drawing program. It’s used by designers to create illustrations, motifs, patterns, cartoons, diagrams and logos which are scalable to any size without the loss of quality.

On this course you’ll learn the fundamentals of Adobe Illustrator and the essential software skills which enable textile designers to create original vector motifs.

Course Description

The course is suitable for textile designers or for anyone interested in learning about the rudiments of vector design and improving their computer design skills. The course will be taught on the PC, and participants are not required to have any prior knowledge of Adobe Illustrator.

On this course you will

  • be introduced to the Illustrator workspace and how to save files
  • learn how to draw shapes using the pen tool
  • select, transform and group objects
  • use brushes and work with colour, fills and strokes
  • blend shapes and colours
  • use and create patterns, including the use of masking and clipping
  • include text in your designs.

What will I gain?

By the end of the course you’ll have the skills and knowledge to build your own vector image portfolio, and a good understanding of how Adobe Illustrator is being used by textile designers today.

Tutor Profile: Louise Groucutt has 14 years’ experience in the textile design industry with a proven track record in home textiles. She’s highly skilled in the use of CAD and has worked as a designer for many well-known retailers including John Lewis, Marks and Spencer, Laura Ashley and Debenhams.

Following a desire to pursue her work in a more personal direction, she’s currently developing her own practice as a designer-maker.
