This course is for writers and performers.

It takes a subjective look at the development of hip hop and rap as an artistic expression, and the hybrid manipulation of language that rap artists use in their work.

Course Description

Established and highly influential figures in the music industry such as Nas, Kendrick Lamar, Rakim, DJ Premier, J Dilla, Alchemist, Kanye West and Clams Casino will be studied, which will aid your creative and entrepreneurial development.

On this course you will:

  • improve your writing skills in relation to structure, form and emotional content
  • gain confidence in your own material
  • explore the historical and political context of hip hop and rap, from inception to today
  • undertake practical workshops to help you gain insight and critical feedback of your work.

You’ll use case studies to better understand the art of sampling, how to harness the creative formula, how to cultivate a career in hip hop and how to be an entrepreneur in the industry.

The course involves written project work, discussions and group interaction.

There’s a focus on equality and cultural diversity in the artists chosen to study, and documentary footage and music containing important information about the artists will be included.

Easily available online links for research prior to and after the sessions will also be made available to you.

What will I gain?

You’ll leave this course with an excellent knowledge of the music industry and hip hop culture, and the skills to take your writing and/or performing to the next level.

Tutor profile: Nottingham based MC Cappo has been releasing music for over a decade on various record labels, with over thirty releases to his name. He has toured throughout Europe and performed extensively in the UK.

His first LP was released in 2003, followed by his sophomore solo album Genghis in 2010, then Dramatic Change of Fortune in 2016.

He's currently in the process of finalising his fourth solo album to be released winter 2017.

Cappo has been an avid student of Hip Hop and rap for over twenty years, specialising in lyricism, rhythm and poetry.
