Course Description

You might be one of those people who has sometimes wondered what the term ‘thinking outside the box’ means. Or you might be interested in developing your creativity without boundaries. Either way, this course will leave you wanting more.

Practical tasks will be set each day, culminating in exciting visuals suitable for a portfolio. The tasks set will challenge preconceptions about the things around you and will help you develop, explore and experiment with unusual starting points.

On this course you will:

  • be introduced to the language associated with graphic design, as well as formal elements such as colour, layout, composition and typography;
  • learn to understand the importance of the audience and how design decisions are influenced by this knowledge; and
  • appreciate how the choices we make with regards to design and typography shape the tone of a message.

What will you gain?

By the end of the course you will have the beginnings of a portfolio of work, one that has been produced in an informal, creative yet challenging environment.

“Very good insight into graphic design” Isobel, Summer 2015

Tutor Profile: Graham Burton BA, MA, PGCE, PGCM has been involved in design education for many years, before which he ran a successful design studio in Nottingham. He has long believed that design is the art of taking one thing and turning it into another, and anyone who says they don’t copy or steal is an innocent or a liar.
