Course Description

This course will begin with an introduction to the history of modern furniture design.

You’ll learn about designers and the methods and materials they’ve developed, and how pieces have become icons of modernity.

You’ll then quickly move on to practical design projects, where you’ll be encourage to develop your own approach to furniture design combined with ideas about how to present your work in a professional way.

To support your designing you’ll visit our furniture making workshops and see examples of materials being used today.

During this course you will:

  • use sketching and scale model-making to test your ideas
  • work with specialist model-making materials
  • explore scale, colour and texture
  • solving issues around user experience and ergonomics
  • consider modern construction processes.

What will you gain?

By the end of the course you’ll have a sketchbook of ideas and examples of concept development, which will be perfect additions to a portfolio.

You’ll also have a prototype scale model (either completed or in development to continue working on after the course).
