Tutor profile: Mary Murtagh is an award-winning news reporter, video journalist, media trainer, copywriter and PR - and ex-military trainer.

With 15 years’ experience of working in newsrooms across the UK and USA she now runs her own successful business, sharing insider knowledge with anyone who needs to put their best foot forward with the media.

Every year Mary helps thousands of businesses get millions of pounds worth of free publicity in print, radio and television coverage.

She works for private and public sector clients such as the Department of Health, Symphony Housing Group, Eastman Chemicals, UNICEF and the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

She is regularly deployed overseas to take part in MOD and NATO military exercises where she trains senior officers to handle difficult interviews dealing with fatal accidents, mistakes, complex political situations and justifying military action.

Back in the UK she takes part in emergency planning exercises covering natural disasters, nuclear submarine leaks and power station catastrophes, producing social media updates, print and broadcast news items to simulate the media’s reaction.
