Wednesday mornings

This course is drawn from our suite of Real Estate masters programmes. It has dual aims. Firstly, it will develop your knowledge and understanding of the UK construction sector and the strategies which can be adopted by clients to successfully procure construction projects. Secondly, it will develop your ability to interpret the unique needs and priorities of different client groups to identify relevant and appropriate strategies for the particular client and project and to apply tools and techniques to support the implementation of those strategies.

A CPD certificate will be issued upon successful completion of this course.  Successful completion of this course can also contribute 15 credits towards a full 180 credit MSc Built Environment award.

Course Description

This course will include:

  • Demand and supply characteristics of theUKconstruction sector.
  • The Business case for a project.
  • Definition of the project, performance indicators.
  • Design related issues, value management.
  • Cost forecasting.
  • Project timings.
  • Development of a strategic brief and selection of procurement strategy.
  • Implementation of procurement strategy and selection methodology.
  • Funding and client resources.
  • Managing the project.
  • Project closure, post project review, benchmarking techniques.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Provide evaluated solutions to complex problems relating to the procurement of construction works demonstrating a critical understanding of the relative merits of various approaches.
  • Critically evaluate a broad range of factors impacting on the context within which procurement decisions are made.
