Advanced Construction Materials

Saturdays (18 February, 4 and 8 March and 1 April)

This course is drawn from our suite of Civil Engineering masters programmes. The course engages you with advanced study of the principles, analysis and design aspects of surface structure systems such as roads, airfields, ports, concrete hard standing and industrial ground floors.

A CPD certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course. Successful completion of this course can also contribute 15 credits towards a full 180 credit MSc Built Environment award.

Course Code

Course Dates

18th February 2017 – 1st April 2017

Course Fee

Course Description

This course aims to critically appraise the fundamental scientific and engineering principles of surface structure engineering. You will appraise and contrast conflicting theories that underpin the application of design techniques, make judgements based on skills and knowledge to apply various design codes and be able to evaluate them critically, and evaluate alternative design strategies and be able to critically select appropriate design strategy in accordance with design requirements.

This course will include:

  • Fundamentals of surface structures analysis and design;
  • Prediction and analysis of loading;
  • Analysis of surface structure and material properties;
  • Pavement foundation design;
  • Highways, port and airfield pavement design;
  • Industrial ground floor design; and
  • Case studies.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Integrate knowledge of mathematics, science, information technology, design and engineering practice for the analysis and design of surface structures to solve a substantial range of problems, some of a complex nature, apply understanding to novel and challenging situations and be aware of the limitation of the solution.
  • Assess the capabilities and limitation of computer based methods for problem solving in the analysis and design of surface structures.
  • Investigate from available data that which is pertinent to an unfamiliar problem in the analysis and design of surface structures and apply, in its solution, computer based tools where appropriate.
  • Critically evaluate fundamental knowledge of the analysis and design of surface structures in the investigation of new and emerging technologies.
  • Appraise and use new methods in the analysis and design of surface structures required for novel situations and adapt to specific purposes if necessary.
